The Academic Success Center provides a host of services, including focused study sessions, supplemental instruction and academic coaching. The Center serves all students: those working to overcome challenges as well as high achievers striving to reach the next level of academic excellence. In a student-centered environment, we employ intentional, proactive, and innovative approaches to help all our students succeed.
The Academic Success Center strives to:
- Create transformative learning experiences for students.
- Collaborate with parents, teachers and guidance to meet NDCL’s academic success, retention, and college preparatory goals and objectives.
- Incorporate relevant research and implement best practices into programming and activities.
Freshman Success Series
Freshman in the intervention program or in an Enhanced Learning Block participate in a series of sessions during the first semester intended to develop the skills necessary to succeed in high school. In group meetings, our newest students learn skills such as: organization, time management, note-taking, and goal setting.
ACT Preparation
Juniors in second semester Enhanced Learning Blocks have the opportunity to use part of these blocks for preparation for the spring ACT tests. Using the Method Test Prep computer based program, students strengthen the skills necessary for success on these important college entrance tests.
Test Make-Up
Students with an Enhanced Learning Block can make up missed tests/quizzes during their ELB. Click here to fill out the test make-up form.
Special Needs
Special Education:
NDCL serves students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) through the Jon Peterson scholarships for students with special needs available through the Ohio Department of Education. A full-time intervention specialist works with these students in a special intervention block to help them succeed in their regular NDCL curriculum. For more information you can go to the Ohio Department of Education Jon Peterson website
Academic Accommodations:
Students with disabilities and students with certain medical or psychological diagnoses may be eligible for academic accommodations for both classroom instruction and assessments, including standardized testing. To access these accommodations, contact Sr. Michelle Kelly, Director of the Academic Success Center.
Academic Coaching
Full and part-time academic coaches work with all students to develop skills, to remediate deficiencies and to help prepare students for assessments. Students with an Enhanced Learning Block each have an academic coach to help monitor academic progress and to encourage academic practices that lead to success. Coaches are available during Enhanced Learning Blocks, Lion Time, and after school so all students have the opportunity to take advantage of academic coaching.
